A sustainability strategy for Central America’s largest sugar producer

Pantaleon needed a clear, business focussed sustainability strategy covering its sugar growing and processing operations. WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s management consultants and process engineers provided the expert support.

Bullet Operations in Guatemala Honduras Mexico and Nicaragua
Bullet A strong team of management and engineers delivering faster outcomes.

As a leading Central American company, Pantaleon’s ambitions are to be a global business leader in the region.  The firm’s senior management asked WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff to work with them to develop a strong environmental and sustainability strategy together with a practical implementation plan.

Our management consultants and process engineers developed a strong business as usual analysis covering Pantaleon’s value chain.  Together with the strategy, we developed a practical plan – ranging from the genetic diversity of sugar cane grown to the impacts of climate change on future flood risk, from effective irrigation in cane fields to wastewater treatment at the company’s mills.

Our advice covered both what the focus should be and was also grounded in strong executive engagement and dialogue with Pantaleon’s management and engineers.

The strategy is now being implemented, delivering operational resilience, cost savings and new opportunities to supply sugar to higher margin customers.
